Number of Opioid Overdose Deaths (State)
Years Available: 1999–2018
Permanent Link: http://data.sagepub.com/sagestats/16362
General Notes: A "#" indicates that the value is suppressed because the sub-national data was limited to only 0-9 deaths (this is as of May 2011). An "!" indicates that rates are "unreliable" because the death count is less than 20. Data are based on death certificates for U.S. residents, which list a single underlying cause of death, up to 20 additional multiple causes, and demographic information about the deceased. Nonresidents (i.e. resident aliens, citizens living abroad, Puerto Rican residents and other territories) and fetal deaths are excluded. Drug overdose deaths are classified using the International Classification of Disease (10th edition) underlying cause of death codes. Among deaths where drug overdose was the underlying cause of death, specific opioid deaths were identified using the following multiple cause of death codes: T40.0 (opium), T40.1 (heroin); T40.2 (other opioids - natural and semisynthetic opioids); T40.3 (methadone); T40.4 (other synthetic narcotics - synthetic opioids, other than methadone); T40.6 (other and unspecified narcotics).
