General Notes: *Median value gives the value for the "average" metro area for this metric, the 50th percentile of the small subset of Metro Areas included in the survey. It should not be seen as nationally representative. **The reference person of the consumer unit is the first member mentioned by the respondent when asked to "Start with the name of the person or one of the persons who owns or rents the home." It is with respect to this person that the relationship of the other consumer unit members is determined. The terms consumer unit, family, and household are often used interchangeably for convenience. However, the proper technical term for the purposes of the Consumer Expenditure Survey is consumer unit, which includes family households, financially independent individuals (even if they live with other households), and two or more persons living together who use their incomes to make joint expenditure decisions. A ! symbol indicates that data are likely to have large sampling errors.
