It should not be seen as nationally representative. **Vehicle purchases (net outlay) includes the net outlay (purchase price minus trade-in value) on new and used domestic and imported cars and trucks and other vehicles, including motorcycles and private planes. The terms consumer unit, family, and household are often used interchangeably for convenience. However, the proper technical term for the purposes of the Consumer Expenditure Survey is consumer unit, which includes family households, financially independent individuals (even if they live with other households), and two or more persons living together who use their incomes to make joint expenditure decisions.
