    * The FBI definition of rape expanded in 2013, but not all jurisdictions changed to the new definition. Metro areas are made up of cities, some of which use the legacy definition and some of which use the revised definition - use caution when comparing. All previous years use the legacy definition. See the source tab for additional details. The national figure includes only the legacy definition of rape.

General Notes: The FBI definition of rape expanded in 2013, but not all jurisdictions changed to the new definition as of 2013. The legacy definition of rape is: Forcible rape is the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Assaults or attempts to commit rape by force or threat of force are included. However, statutory rape without force and other sex offenses are excluded. The 2013 revised definition is: Rape is penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim. Attempts or assaults to commit rape are also included; however, statutory rape and incest are excluded. This revised definition includes both male and female victims and drops "forcible" from the title.

Starting in 2015, the metropolitan statistical area "Macon, GA" (Place code 31420) is referred to as "Macon-Bibb County, GA."
