General Notes: *Median value gives the value for the "average" county for this metric, the 50th percentile of all counties reporting data. Median values should not be seen as nationally representative. **A short ton is defined as 2000 pounds. SAGE converted to original data from thousand short tons to short tons. Average mine price is calculated by dividing the total free on board (f.o.b). rail/barge value of the coal sold by the total coal sold. 2011 does not include data from mines producing less than 25,000 short tons. Years 2001-2010, do not include data from mines producing less than 10,000 short tons and excludes silt, culm, refuse bank, slurry dam, and dredge operations. For years 1994-2000, coal production is attributed to the county in which the mine originally opened. Production excludes silt, culm, slurry dam, and dredge operations except for Pennsylvania anthracite. ***Value rounds to zero. A # symbol indicates the following: Data withheld to avoid disclosure.
