    * In 2003, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) added “Micropolitan areas” to the list of metro areas. As a result of the inclusion of hundreds of new “micro areas” in the study, the national median metro area for Statistics of U.S. Business data dropped significantly. This change may be reflected in the change from 2002 to 2003 or 2003 to 2004, depending on the data series.

    General Notes: *Median value gives the value for the "average" metro area for this metric, the 50th percentile of all metro areas reporting data. Starting with 2007 data, the Statistics of U.S. Businesses has adopted the Noise Infusion method of data protection. Noise infusion is a method of disclosure avoidance in which values for each establishment are perturbed prior to table creation by applying a random noise multiplier to the magnitude data. Prior to 2007, data suppression was used non-disclosure purposes. For more information on Noise Infusion and Suppression, visit ***Low noise indicates the cell value was changed by less than 2 percent (years 2007 and later). A ! symbol indicates the following: Moderate noise indicates the value was changed by 2 percent or more but less than 5 percent (years 2007 and later). A # symbol indicates the following:Indicates that cells were suppressed when noise infusion would have been 5 percent or greater (years 2007 and later) or for additional protection from disclosure or because the quality of the data do not meet publication standards (all years).
